One of the greatest things
about Peace Corps is that new groups are always coming to country to dedicate
themselves to this 2-year journey.
One of the worst things
about Peace Corps is that people are always leaving to embark on new adventures
and journeys.
Since my arrival to
country, one group has COS’ed, or Closed (Of) Their Service. The second group is in the process now.
The individuals that
COS’ed back in September were people that I unfortunately had little time to
get to know. They definitely served as
my friends and many conversations were shared with these amazing individuals
but I can’t say that I was truly saddened when they left for their next great
adventure.
Fast forward to the
present and the group that is currently COS’ing. These Volunteers work in the education sector
and have been in country since February 2011.
When I arrived at site these Volunteers were the ones reassuring us of
our decisions and welcoming us with open arms.
They prepared us delicious meals.
I worked alongside them at National Camp GLOW. They spent the holidays with us. I felt like they served as my Peace Corps
parents… Helping to show us the way and introduce us to the true Ugandan
lifestyle.
When I got to site I
thought to myself, I have nine months with these people… That’s like forever. Well who knew that forever could go by so
quickly.
I am now thinking that the
group ahead of me will begin to COS in September. Those goodbyes will be equally as
difficult. Then it is up to the mighty
May 2012 group to lead the way.
The friendships made here will
continue back home. I mean who else is
going to understand when I speak in local vernacular or when I am craving millet
porridge?
