Here I am in my final
weeks as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
As I peruse the aisles of
my local supermarkets, I realize that some of the things I am buying are my
lasts purchases in Uganda… For 2014 that is.
Here is an ode to those
lasts.
To my last tube of Colgate
MaxFresh Cooling Crystals toothpaste.
To my last Enliven Kiwi
& Fig shampoo and conditioner bottles.
To my last bottles of Nivea
moisturizing body lotion and energy fresh spray-on deodorant.
To my last Colgate 360° surround toothbrush.
To my last Eden Apricot Face Scrub.
To my last bottle of Clean &
Clear Clearing Cleanser.
Shop after shop I would
search,
High and low for your
place among the abyss of powdered milk and file folders.
One week you were there.
The next you were not.
You were very good at
hiding.
I was very good at
seeking.
Throughout our time
together you have provided me with fresh breath and skin somehow clear of
blackheads.
You’ve allowed me the
chance to feel clean in a country where dust is my common cover-up.
Our days are quickly coming to an
end.
America will have more
options than my brain will be able process under fluorescent lights.
I'll most likely collapse
due to overstimulation,
Yearning for the days of
hide and seek.
